Project description

Sector coupling means the combination of individual energy distribution networks to form integrated energy systems (hybrid networks) with the aim of creating a global optimum for the use of all types of energy considered (electricity, heat, mobility, etc.).

In Hybrid DH the focus was on the integration of wind energy into the local district heating network (sector coupling of electricity to heat) in the area around Neusiedl am See.

The main findings of the exploratory project are:

  • A power-to-heat integration into a heating network with locally generated electricity from renewable energies can also be carried out exergetically efficiently with heat pumps without a usable external waste heat source.
  • Even with the implementation of the heat pump integration, large amounts of locally generated wind power are available that can be marketed.

A demonstration project based on the developed technical and economic concept - Hybrid DH Demo - was started in 2019.
